The Lightbulb Moment
In 2022, my family & friends all entered the Omaze draw for the £3.4 million Lake District house, a ‘wow factor’ dream property with stunning views of Lake Windermere, which was won by a lovely family in Telford.
I was so excited to see Post Knott Lodge and Southview Spa pop up on social media, offering the opportunity to stay in these incredible places. Then, the bubble burst when I realised that the price points wouldn’t be achievable due to their size and luxury.
A few years ago, I set up @DinkTime when we decided not to progress with IVF and realised that when you don’t have children, it can be difficult to meet new people. This year, my husband Ross set up Kendal Dinner Club, inviting 12 people to our apartment for a meal once a month. We discovered that many people would value the opportunity to meet others.
It got me thinking about when my sister worked as a chalet host in the Alps. Could we do something similar in the Lake District, splitting the cost of a luxury property and creating a unique holiday experience? Could we combine the best of the worlds—a stunning location, extraordinary property, and local knowledge to create exciting and tailor-made itineraries and the opportunity to meet like-minded people?
There was nothing to lose, so I contacted the owners, and they were both interested – the idea was born.
I also run a glamping Roundhouse on my dad’s South Lakeland farm and love sharing my favourite walks & places to visit.
I promote my glamping business via Coolstays and Cool Places, different independent companies showcasing some of the most extraordinary places to stay across the UK and beyond. So, the idea of CoolMeets, a way to enjoy these properties together in a social environment, emerged.
A few years ago, I had aimed to set up a variety of AirBnB experiences, but at the time they had closed new applications. They have just re-opened them – watch this space!
In this economic climate, I’m sensitive to prices & understand the price points may still be above travel budgets, so I’m looking at offering a selection of properties going forward to give the biggest range of choice.
